This FREE training on Saturday May 5 will run from 9 AM – 1 PM at the Middlesex High School, located at 300 John F Kennedy Dr, Middlesex, NJ 08846

We will start the morning with a lecture indoors, and then get out in the field to test our knowledge of streams and stream habitat.

Please wear clothing and footwear that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty.

Bait, hooks, bobbers, and weights are provided. If you have your own fishing equipment, you may bring it with you.

Organized groups can also request this program on another date. Call us to set up this program for a group. Boy Scouts may obtain their merit badge by setting up an additional meeting with Patrick.

WHAT: a clean-up of Mile Run Brook on Saturday May 12 from 9:30 AM to noon. This will be followed by a community gathering in Boyd Park.

WHERE: multiple sites, details to follow.

Please wear closed toe shoes and clothes you are willing to get dirty. Gloves and bags will be provided!

Now in its 9th year, the Brownfield Coalition of the Northeast (BCONE) will be hosting the Northeast Sustainable Communities Workshop (NSCW) 2018, at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, New Jersey, on May 23, 2018. The conference brings together experts and attendees to discuss the most current and state of the art approaches and strategies that you probably will not hear anywhere else

The NSCW's goal is to break new ground, offer new ideas, and posit new concepts on the topics of sustainability, collaboration and leverage, contamination, resiliency, brownfields, technology, and their impact on community revitalization. Amid rising sea levels and extreme weather events, North Jersey communities are increasingly turning to resiliency planning to address the impacts of climate change and to manage stormwater in more effective and ecologically friendly ways. The Together North Jersey (TNJ) Resilience Task Force and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) are co-sponsoring the three-part Resilience Webinar Series to explain approaches and tools available. The webinar series emphasizes the path to implementation, highlighting successful projects in North Jersey and elsewhere in the state and providing information on funding opportunities.

Each webinar is eligible for .75 AICP CM credits.

Webinar 1: Climate Change & Wetland Restoration

Rutgers University’s current projections estimate a sea level rise of 1.4 feet by 2050, leaving coastal and riverine communities increasingly vulnerable to periodic flooding and permanent inundation. Encroaching sea waters threaten to destroy the integrity of North Jersey’s wetlands. The loss of wetlands, in turn, means the loss of an important ecological resource and a critical barrier that protects communities from flooding and storm surges. This webinar explains the importance of wetlands in mitigating the impacts of climate change and highlights funding sources and examples of successful wetlands projects implemented by North Jersey communities.
